Norsepower is a Finnish clean technology company, which since 2012 has been developing a modernized version of the Flettner rotor – a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship. When the wind conditions are favourable, the rotor sail harnesses the sea wind for propulsion, it decreases the power required from the main engines to maintain speed and thus, reduces the fuel consumption and all related emission. Rotor sails can be used with new vessels or they can be retrofitted to existing ships.
M/S Viking Grace, an LNG-fuelled 57,565 GT cruise ferry, currently operates in the archipelago between Turku (Finland) and Stockholm (Sweden), and is one of the most environment friendly cruise ferries in the global maritime industry.
The next step of continuous improvement with environmental factors for Viking Line was the launch of co-operation project with Norsepower with the plan to install 24m high and 4m wide rotor sail unit on the top deck of a cruise ferry. Before this retrofit project was possible to accomplish, it required to some relocation of equipment and devices on the cruiser ship. For the SAT-antennas, the new location was carefully calculated on the rear side of ship. The location was challenging, because a new platform a few meters above the top deck was needed. SAT-antennas ensure that the televisions will work during the journey.
GAISSA's role as Norsepower subcontractor in the project was to create concept proposals and industrial design for the SAT-platform. The aim of project was to follow the Viking Grace's original design language and to fit the solution visually in the context without disturbing the other activities and areas on the cruise ship. In addition the safety issues were carefully considered in different scenarios both for the maintenance workers and passengers.
The steel SAT platform and base construction of rotor sail were lifted and assembled on site in large chunks in January 2018. Finally the rotor sail unit was installed during second maintenance break in April.
Now, Viking Grace is the first passenger cruise ship of its size in the world equipped with a mechanical rotor sail unit. With its rotor sail solution, Norsepower has set high targets to reduce annually 300 tonnes of fuel consumption and reduce carbon emission by up to 900 tonnes/year. M/S Viking Grace made its first voyage as the first passenger ship in the world assisted with a rotor sail unit on 12 April 2018.
